Advanced Fillers & Pigments is one of Degussa's most important businesses. In 2005, it generated sales of Euro 1.2 billion (2005), with workforce of 2764 at 30 production sites in 18 countries.
Advanced Fillers & Pigments is the worlds sole single-source producer and supplier of carbon blacks, performance silica and rubber silanes (three-product system).
Carbon black remains the predominant reinforcing filler for rubber products (particularly tires). It is also widely used in coatings, inks (including jet inks), and plastics.
Performance silica is used extensively in the rubber and tire industry (mainly tires) in conjunction with rubber silanes. Performance silica excels in special applications in such diverse products as toothpastes, pharmaceuticals, battery separators, as matting (flatting) agents, coatings for printing papers (including ink-jet paper) and as a reinforcing additive in the silicone rubber industry.
The business unit owns 3 joint ventures in China, including Qingdao Degussa Chemical Company, Ltd. with a capacity of 100,000 metric tons of carbon black, Degussa Lanxing (Rizhao) Chemical Industrial Co., Ltd. for sulfur-functional silanes, and Degussa Wellink Silica (Nanping) Co., Ltd. for performance silica. It now also ranks number one in the Asia/Pacific region, with eight production sites in five countries and a total annual capacity of 175,000 tonnes.
