High Performance Polymers Business Unit and Methacrylates Business Unit Joined HK Optical Fair

The HK Optical Fair was held during 8-10 November, 2006, which was already the 14th edition of this event. It is the biggest show in the region focusing on the industry of eyewear, and offers an excellent platform to meet raw material suppliers, components manufacturers and fashion designers, to get to know the latest trends and to demonstrate our own optical solution. For the first time High Performance Polymers business unit (HP) and Methacrylates business unit (MA) joined the fair this year. There Degussa presented two main product lines: Nylon material, TROGAMID® CX from HP and PMMA material, PLEXIGLAS® from MA, for the optical application.  

TROGAMID® CX is the only transparent polymer available on the market with a microcrystalline structure. It is thus a crystal-clear, UV-resistant material with over 90 percent transparency, a refractive index of 1.516 and an Abbe dispersion number of 52. It’s an outstanding material with the least density compared to all other lenses materials. And also it possesses higher resistance to chemicals and stress-cracking than non-crystalline (amorphous) transparent plastics, in addition to the mechanical advantages of amorphous compounds. TROGAMID® CX meets the demands of manufacturing lenses and frames for glasses, such as sports glasses, sunglasses and thin-rimmed or rimless eyeglasses.

PLEXIGLAS®   Molding Compounds are thermoplastics based on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA).  PLEXIGLAS®   Molding Compounds are characterized by a number of physical and technical properties which are indispensable for manufacturing high quality parts. PLEXIGLAS®   crystal clear grades are so highly transparent that provide the maximum possible light transmission of 92%. PLEXIGLAS®   Molding Compounds present unique clarity and unsurpassed resistance to weathering and aging, the greatest surface hardness and thus the best abrasion resistance of all thermoplastics, which enable them to conserve their high gloss.  PLEXIGLAS®   Molding Compounds are widely used for making sunglasses, reading glasses.
